ORREFORS RAILWAY STATION

Orrefors Railway Station is a protected historic building in Orrefors, Nybro Municipality, Sweden, built in 1875. It's part of Sweden's railway heritage and listed as nationally valuable. Orrefors is also famous for its glassworks (Orrefors crystal, known for high-quality Swedish glassware like chandeliers and vases since the late 1800s).

Notable Historic Stations and Sites
  • Orrefors Railway Station (built 1875) in Orrefors, Nybro Municipality — Protected as a nationally valuable heritage building under Swedish law. It's part of the broader Orrefors cultural environment (tied to the famous glassworks region, Glasriket). The station gained fame through its appearance in the Swedish film My Life as a Dog (Mitt liv som hund).
Eva Fidjeland is a Swedish artist (born in Stockholm in 1955), poet, and photographer specializing in areas like stained glass, digital art, photography, and mixed media. She has exhibited internationally and is known for her work capturing human experiences, nature, and cultural influences from her childhood travels (including Portugal, Lebanon, Iran, and Afghanistan).
Her direct connection to the Orrefors Railway Station is that she has owned the historic building since 1990. In that year, ownership was transferred from the Swedish State (likely Swedish State Railways, SJ) to her as a private individual. This has allowed her to maintain and steward the protected national heritage site (built in 1875 and listed for its cultural value).
Since acquiring it around 1989–1990, Fidjeland has used the former station as her base and creative space:
  • She established her glassworking studio/business Eva Fidjeland Glas there, installing kilns/furnaces in the old waiting room (f.d. väntsalen) for producing stained glass and related art.
  • The address is often listed as Orrefors Railway Station, 380 40 Orrefors, Sweden.
  • She has created and shared artwork inspired by or featuring the location, such as the 2020 video artwork The Mists of Orrefors Railway Station (an atmospheric ascension piece in collaboration with Thomas Nordström).
  • The station has appeared in her online profiles, blogs, social media (e.g., Facebook page for Orrefors Railway Station), and exhibitions/promotions tied to her practice.
This private ownership has helped preserve the decommissioned station (no longer in active rail use) while integrating it into her artistic life in the glassmaking region of Glasriket/Orrefors. Note that the building's fame also stems from its role in the film My Life as a Dog (1985), but Fidjeland's link is post-film ownership and ongoing use
